I've read that each person's own "Golden Age" of comics is when s/he is about 10-12 years old. I was 10 when the New U dropped and I was obsessed with getting on board with the new titles. I quickly chose DP7 as the one I wanted to subscribe to, and I've always said it's my favorite comic of all time. Dave, Randy, Stephanie and the rest all seemed so REAL to me. I loved the persecuted/chased storyline at the beginning, the fact that they weren't heroes and that they'd have nothing in common if not for their paranormal abilities (and what abilities! cool takes on classic powers and new ones as well). Paul Ryan is my favorite comic artist of all time and Mark Gruenwald is my favorite writer. The art is still great and, though a bit wordy in classic 80s style, I think the comics still hold up. Even when the world went insane with the Pitt and the Draft and the War, I dug it.

Gruenwald and Ryan were such a great creative team, and there's never been a storyline like that early DP 7 storyline where they were all on the run in a bus! The Clinic was a cool adversary too.

DP7 was the most consistent, in terms of quality and storytelling, of all the New Universe titles. Grunwald and Ryan provided stability, writing and drawing the entire run. The legendary Al Williamson did a couple fill in inks but it was mostly Tanghal and Bulanadi. Unlike the majority of the New U titles that couldn't keep the same team for more than six issues.
